Kevin Hayes, Kirk Marrison, and Clark Rehberg III, the master aural architects of Kiln, have been in the practice of creating full spectrum sonic landscapes since the early 1990s. The Michigan-based trio has subtly increased the presence of electronics amongst its unique blend of mangled melodies and disrupted acoustics for Sunbox, available this spring on Ghostly. The album plays as a series of groove-able abstractions of instruments both live and programmed that build into compound song structures that gently seize the listener's attention. Not only for the headphone set, Kiln's recent intent has been on finding the intuitive fulcrum between form and function, a balance of nostalgic textures and forward-thinking production. Kiln's latest humanist gallery will appeal to any and all who lust for fine sound form, as sinuous rhythms and dense tone sculptures fuse seamlessly to create a work of stunning beauty. Still very much in line with the ever-progressing "Kiln sound", Sunbox presents patterns of neural floes and radiant currents weaving through picturesque terrain, propelled by an almost biological pulse. That's one way to look at it, anyway; another would be to forget all that and simply listen. Sunbox grows in proportion to your attention and rewards more with every encounter.
